WASM Wombats

Wombat Teams

2001: Reno, Nevada

The WASM Wombats Mining Team were successful in defending their title as world champions in the Open Division of the International Intercollegiate Mining Competition. The overall result for the Open (Mens) Division was WASM Gold 1st, Montana A 2nd and Montana B 3rd, with WASM Green in fourth position. It was a very competitive day, the standard of competition was very high.

After a few disappointing performances in a couple of events, the WASM Gold team was looking a likely 2nd or 3rd position. Montana A had outstanding performances in both the mucking and sawing events and looked like the team to beat. But WASM Gold's good performance in the last two events of the day, surveying and airleg drilling, led to an interesting result: a three-way tie for first position between Montana A, Montana B and WASM Gold. To decide the winning team, a replay of one of the events was required. The 3 team names went into a hat and the judges withdrew Montana A. Montana selected mucking as the event to replay (Montana A had out-mucked WASM Gold by 8 seconds earlier in the day). WASM Gold, in an outstanding performance, were the winners of the re-muck and were hence announced the World Champions.
