1999: Reno, Nevada
In early 1998, the WASM Wombats Mining Team, based at the Western Australian School of Mines in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, was formed. This team of students, with the help of some generous companies and individuals, constructed a training field, and put together a team of nine students to travel to the 21st Annual International Collegiate Mining Games in Reno, Nevada, April 1999. This team, the first ever from WASM to attend the competition, returned with third place overall in the open division, the first time in the event's history an international team has placed in the top three.
